This past October the Marrone Films crew flew out to Prince Edward Island, Canada to film a promotional film for the well-known Canadian breakfast chain, Ben & Florentine.
Ben & Florentine approached us with a vision for a commercial showcasing their famous home fries. B&F’s home fries not only quickly became their signature, but the potatoes themselves are a representation of the company’s mission statement and values. Ben & Florentine pride themselves in a family atmosphere, and great tasting food at the highest level of quality — this is why they only use PEI potatoes.
After several brainstorming sessions we, together with the client, narrowed down the main message they wanted to convey to customers — “Bringing the heart and soul of three generations of potato-farming to your plate every morning.” It was important to show the real people and the “land to table” aspect behind the business. So, with all that in place, we were able to build a great shot list with scenes on the farm, PEI countryside, and an interview with an actual farmer (not voiceover from an actor).
Prince Edward Island boasts spectacular landscapes. From beautiful fields to lighthouses, the Confederation Bridge, and red sand beaches, all these and more made our cinematography effortless.
Domenic Marrone, DoP on the shoot recounts “traveling with film gear is never easy, the key is to simplify.” The team used Canon DSLR cameras, a 3-axis gimble, a slider and a drone for aerial shots. The best part of the trip definitely had to be on one of the last days. The team woke up extra early to get some of the best sun we’ve captured yet. Domenic likes to call it “the magic hour” and we couldn’t agree more! It really made the film spectacular. Catching the breath out of the farmer’s mouths against a backlit sky — stunning!
Filled with nature and greenery, pretty houses and a small town feel wherever you went, PEI definitely gained some new fans from our crew. We are looking forward to going back with our families and sharing with them the part of Canadian culture we learned and filmed through this experience.
